This paper deals with an interesting aspect of identity, namely that of males’ and males’ identity through phonology and grammar. It is stated that the use of a sex-specific style reflects one’s social image. This means that Gender specific style is bound by social norms. It can be used as a strategy to fulfill certain objectives. In another way, one can say that gender-specific style signals a social identity. To signal their social identity, men and woman are likely to refer to specific style formulae in order to make their speech acts explicit. It is undeniably true that females’ speech denotes inferiority, less confidence, and insecurity. Women are prone to the use of all that is in both verbal and non-verbal communication. Females are quite “choosy” about their language style since they tend to be prestigious. Their speech patterns apparently very careful compared to males’ patterns. This leads to say that the sex of the speaker confines him/her to use a sex-defining style. Accordingly, the choice of a specific style is progressively restricted by a number of constraints that govern both males' and females' behavior.]]>
Cet article traite d'un aspect intéressant de l'identité, à savoir celui de l'identité des femmes et des hommes à travers la phonologie et la grammaire. L'utilisation d'un style spécifique au sexe reflète son image sociale. Cela signifie que le style spécifique au genre est limité par les normes sociales. Il peut être utilisé comme une stratégie pour atteindre certains objectifs. D'une autre manière, on peut dire que le style spécifique au genre signale une identité sociale. Pour signaler leur identité sociale, les hommes et les femmes sont susceptibles de se référer à des formules de style spécifiques afin d'expliciter leurs actes de langage. Il est indéniable que le discours des femmes dénote une infériorité, moins de confiance et d'insécurité. Les femmes sont enclines à utiliser tout ce qui est dans la communication verbale et non verbale, elles sont assez « sélectives » quant à leur style de langage car elles ont tendance à être prestigieuses. Leurs modèles de discours apparemment très prudents par rapport aux modèles des hommes. Cela dit que le sexe du locuteur le contraint à utiliser un style définissant le sexe. Ainsi, le choix d'un style spécifique est progressivement limité par un certain nombre de contraintes qui régissent le comportement des hommes comme des femmes.]]>

The Temporal and Modal Values of the Verb in the Arabic Language: Comparative Perspectives
It is commonly known that Arabic morphology is non-concatenative; In this sense, word forms are composed of interwoven morphemes They are based on a consonantal root that carries a semantic load, a vocalic pattern that conveys a syntactic function, and a skeletal morpheme with a canonical shape that reveals a particular meaning to fulfill a grammatical functionIn this research work, we focus only on the perfective and imperfective as well as their particularities within the Arabic morphological system A great attention is given to the values of both tenses This mechanism has been tackled from a comparative perspective where two different languages (Arabic and French) are subjected to analysis The resulted differences will serve for a theoretical framework within a general theory of translation; This work is an attempt to describe the mechanisms of morphological construction in Arabic. Il est communément connu que la morphologie arabe est non concaténative. En ce sens, les formes de mots sont composées de morphèmes entrelacés. Elles sont basées sur une racine consonantique qui porte une charge sémantique, un schéma vocalique qui véhicule une fonction syntaxique et une structure squelettique de morphèmes dont la forme canonique révèle un sens particulier pour remplir une fonction grammaticale.Dans ce travail de recherche, nous nous intéressons uniquement à l’accompli et l’inaccompli ainsi qu'à leurs particularités au sein du système morphologique arabe. Une grande attention est portée aux valeurs des deux temps. Ce mécanisme a été abordé dans une perspective comparative où deux langues différentes (arabe et français) sont soumises à l’analyse. Les différences ainsi obtenues serviront de cadre théorique d’une théorie générale de la traduction. Ce travail est une tentative afin de décrire des mécanismes de construction morphologique en arabe. Nous nous sommes concentré principalement sur les valeurs de l'accompli et de l'inaccompli afin de lever l'ambiguïté de certaines équivalences entre l'arabe et le français dans tout acte de traduction.]]>

When Rewritings and Sequels of Don Quixote Are Immersed in the Didactics of Spanish as a Foreign Language
Learning languages is not limited to a mere knowledge of its grammar and vocabulary; it also means learning about the culture and history of the relative country (or countries). Classical literature is an unlimited source of knowledge for a student of foreign languages. It allows them to learn language, culture and history at the same time. So, for centuries, The Quixote and other masterpieces of Spanish literature formed part of the learning programs of Spanish. Reading those classics helped the teachers to achieve multiple objectives, the students get to know new words while acquiring a cultural and historical background of the era. But for some reasons, in recent years, these classics have been replaced by other materials, mainly audiovisuals, to enrich the vocabulary of students and promote the Spanish culture. This new methodology, based on technology, could be effective in some cases, but the students tend to read less, which influenced their writing abilities and reduced greatly their vocabulary. In our article, -taking The Quixote as a reference-, we propose the use of sequels and literary rewritings as an alternative to make these classics known. The method presented in this study is intended for students at a higher or advanced level (mainly university), but can be applied to students at a more elementary level with some adjustments. Some suggestions and practical applications are given to be employed in the class of Spanish as a foreign language. This study is based on a survey administered to Algerian Hispanists in order to collect their views and opinions about the efficiency of sequels and rewritings as a teaching strategy of Spanish to Algerian students, as well as in the didactics of literature in general. The incorporation of sequels is geared by its concept of narrative continuation that generates a suspense effect in the readers and stimulates their curiosity for reading. The game of continuing someone else's work could also inspire the creative writing class and lead students to create something of their own based on a previously read text. The vocabulary newly acquired by the students is put into action, accelerating their memorization and assimilation. This is confirmed by the informants’ answers stressing the improvement of the students’ discursive competence and raising their interest in reading literary texts.]]>
El Quijote y otras obras cumbres de la literatura española formaban, desde siglos, parte de los programas de aprendizaje del ELE, pero el nivel de dificultad de la lengua usada en tales obras desanima hasta a los estudiantes más determinados ; especialmente en la era de velocidad y de los avances tecnológicos en la cual vivimos. Entonces los profesores, aún conscientes de la importancia de la lectura, optan por otros métodos, principalmente audiovisuales, para enriquecer su vocabulario y dar a conocer esas obras representativas de la cultura española. En este artículo, tomando el Quijote como referencia, pretendemos plantear algunas consideraciones acerca del uso de las secuelas y reescrituras literarias como estrategias didácticas del E/LE, así como en la didáctica de la literatura de manera general.]]>

تاريخ الترجمة هو مجموعة واسعة من الممارسات التي تتراوح من تاريخ الترجمة الفورية إلى سير المترجمين، بما في ذلك تاريخ ترجمات ال كتب المقدسة، وهو نهج تاريخي يهتم بأنساق الترجمة والمترجمين كموضوع بحث ويهتم كذلك بالممارسات والتمثلات التي تتعلق بهم. يهدف هذا المقال الى تقديم صورة تقريبية عن المساهمة العربية في عملية تأريخ الترجمة، وذلك من خلال تحليل الإنتاج العلمي العربي في تاريخ الترجمة المنشور باللغات العربية والإنجليزية والفرنسية والإسبانية خلال الفترة الممتدة من 1960 إلى غاية 2017. واعتمدنا في هذا التحليل على المقاربة الببليومترية في دراسة الإنتاج العلمي المنشور بالعالم العربي في حقل تاريخ الترجمة. وارتكزت المقاربة الببليومترية في تحولات الإنتاج من حيث المواضيع المكونة له، وكذا اللغات الصادرة به ولحظات إنتاجه بالإضافة إلى أشكال إصداراته. ودراسة تاريخ الترجمة بالعالم العربي يعتبر مطمحا علميا يستمد مشروعيته من الحاجة إلى تتبع حركية الإنتاج العربي في تاريخ الترجمة بمختلف مكوناته، ومجالات نشره وتداوله ومستويات الترابط بين بنيات منتجيه وقنوات إصداره ولغات نشره.]]>
Research in the History of Translation: A reading of the Arabic contribution to the history of translation
of the nations of the world from one language to another. If we believe that everything in this existence has a history, we should not be surprised to consider that translation has a history. The history of translation refers to a wide range of practices ranging from the history of interpretation to the biographies of translators, including the history of translations of holy books, a historical approach concerned with the modes of translation and translators as a subject of research and also concerned with the practices and representations that relate to them. This article aims to present an approximate picture of the Arab contribution to the process of translation historiography, by analyzing the Arab scientific production in the history of translation published in Arabic, English, French and Spanish during the period from 1960 to 2017. In this analysis, we relied on the bibliometric approach in the study of scientific production published in the Arab world in the field of translation history. The bibliometric approach was based on the transformations of production in terms of its constituent topics, as well as the languages issued in it and the moments of its production in addition to the forms of its publications. Statistical analysis of the distribution of topics of scientific production in translation studies indicates that three or four topics occupied the largest proportion, and the proportions of other topics are weak, and some topics are completely absent in this production and research is reduced in other topics such as the history of translation in the colonial period, or the history of translation in the world. The study of the history of translation in the Arab world is considered a scientific aspiration that derives its legitimacy from the need to trace the dynamics of Arab production in the history of translation in its various components, and the fields of its publication and circulation. and levels of interdependence between the structures of its producers, its channels of release, and publishing languages.]]>

تعد الامثال نتاجا للثقافة وما يعرف "بالأمثال المتعلقة بالشهر" نوع سائد في المجتمع. و يسلط هذا البحث الضوء على جانب من جوانب الممارسات الاجتماعية واللغوية في الثقافة الفلسطينية، من لدن كبار السن الفلسطينيين، وتناولت الدراسة عينة مكونة من ثلاثين مثالا متعلقا بالشهر جمعت من صحيفة القدس الفلسطينية ومعجم الامثال الفلسطينية المعاصرة للوباني )1999( ومن معجم الامثال لفريحة )1995(، وتظهر الامثال المتعلقة بالشهر بصورة واضحة وظائف اتصالية في السياق الاجتماعي واللغوي لأفكار وممارسات ثقافية متنوعة تعبر عن ارث ينتقل من جيل الى جيل وعن ذكريات من الماضي التليد ترسمها حياة الفلاح الفلسطيني وعن التحذير من سوء الاحوال الجوية على مدار العام، ودرست الامثال المتعلقة بالشهر المترجمة الى اللغة الانجليزية من جانب فريحة (1974(، وفقا لمنهج نورد ) 1991 و 1997( الذي يصنف الترجمة إلى صنفين: اولهما، الترجمة التوثيقية، والتي ترمي لتوثيق اللغة والثقافة المنقول منها والترجمة الوظيفية التي تبدي تح يزا ثقافيا واضحا للغة والثقافة المنقول اليها وما ينطوي على ذلك من استخدام عدة استراتيجيات في الترجمة. وخلصت الدراسة إلى لجوء فريحة (1974( للصنف الاول في الترجمة، وهذا لا يعني ان الصنف الثاني غير ملائم، بل ان الصنفين يمكن استخدامهما وفقا لمعايير تتعلق بغرض الترجمة والجمهور المتلقي للترجمة.]]>
Proverbs are deemed to be the products or by-products of the culture, a predominant type of which is, what we may term, Month-Related Proverbs (MRPs). The present article examines sociolinguistic (MRPs) utilised by the doyen(ne) of Palestinians, consisting of a corpus of thirty MRPs which are drawn from ṣaḥīfat al-Quds (Al-Quds Daily Newspaper), Dictionary of Palestinian Proverbs (1999) by Lubani and A Dictionary of Modern Lebanese Proverbs, with conflated Arabic proverbs with English translation by Freyha (1995). The article shows the functions of MRPs are mainly (1) to take great pride in their cultural heritage that seemed to have passed from one generation to the next; (2) to recapitulate various aspects of peasant life— memories of a bygone age; (3) to warn against unfavourable weather conditions over a year. The article examines the translations in view of Nord’s (1991 and 1997) documentary translation and instrumental translation. The findings of the article show that documentary translation seems to be considered the most appropriate translation method opted for to inculcate the values of Palestinian culture in Target Language (TL) audience.]]>

:يلعب الاقناع دورا فعالا في إقناع الفرد عبر وسائل الاتصال المختلفة. فعادة يستخدم معظم الافراد طرق الاقناع المختلفة في حياتهم اليومية وذلك من اجل التأثير في معتقدات وقيم ومواقف الآخرين. وتعد الخطابات الافتتاحية من اهم امثلة الاتصال بين الرؤساء والمواطنين. فتتناول هذه الدراسة طرق واستراتيجيات الاقناع في خطاب تنصيب الرئيس جو بايدن وذلك بهدف إبراز استراتيجيات الاقناع المستخدمة. ويحدث ذلك من خلال تحليل مقتطفات من الخطاب باستخدام نظرية سيرل للأفعال الكلامية ونظرية فيركلاف لضمائر الفاعل. وعلاوة على ذلك، استخدام الإيثوس والباتوس واللوغوس والتي شرح ماهيتها أرسطو- والغرض منها هو الإقناع. وتظهر النتائج ان الافعال الكلامية المتعددة يمكن ان توجد في جملة واحدة وكذلك استخدام ضمائر الفاعل التي يمكن ان تكون مقنعة. وأخيرا، يمكن التأكيد على عملية الاقناع من خلال اللجوء بقدر كبير إلى اللوغوس والتي يمكن ان تعزز الايثوس.]]>
Persuasive strategies are very significant as they are found in all human interactions in every aspect of life, particularly in politics. They take place in a way which is recognized and understood by the audience or the addressees. Such strategies are used by speakers in order to influence others to modify and/or change their beliefs, values, attitudes, and way of thinking. They are used to convince others by a certain idea or a concept as well. They also reveal a lot about the identity of the speaker. In other words, persuasive strategies must persuade the addressee at the end. Therefore, this paper examines the persuasive strategies found in President Joe Biden’s Inauguration Speech. It aims at highlighting the persuasive strategies used to reveal the identity of the speaker. In the micro-analysis provided by this study, segments of speeches are illustrated to verify the illocutionary act in order to know the speaker’s intended meaning in terms of Searle’s Speech Act Theory based on the five categories of speech which are: assertives, commissives, expressives, directives, and declaration. Afterwards, the use of deictic pronouns such as: the first-person singular pronoun “I” and the exclusive and inclusive “WE” is analysed based on Fairclough’s assumption in Critical Discourse Analysis with the aim to either show the speaker’s integrity or to give a devoted and close impression. A brief explanation is provided to facilitate the process of understanding the meaning behind its use. Lastly, the use of Aristotle’s persuasion appeal as: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos is examined. Ethos is used to show truthfulness. Pathos is used to express emotions and feelings. Logos is used to support arguments through logical assumptions and facts. The findings indicate that multiple speech acts can occur in a single utterance with different connotations based on the context. The excessive use of a certain act can be significant. The analysis of speech acts reveals a lot about the speaker’s identity and the relationship between the speaker and the audience. It also shows that the use of deictic pronouns can be strategic and persuasive as well. This is simply because inclusive “WE” can include both the speaker and the audiences to show unity and solidarity. The exclusive “WE” can include the speaker but not all the audiences. Finally, the process of persuasion can be emphasised by significant resort to logos, which can also reinforce ethos appeal. When Linguistic Signs Become the Dictionaries Entries: The Case of French Historical Dictionary
When reading a text, listening to a speech, or learning a language, we almost always check a language dictionary to understand the meaning(s) of difficult words. In this regard, linguistics, according to Ferdinand De Saussure, defines words as linguistic signs that have been constructed from an arbitrary relationship between a signifier and a signified. In the context of this definition of words, the dictionary has an important linguistic function, namely re-expressing the arbitrary relationship between words and their meaning through the explanation and contextualization of a new relationship between entries and their lexicographic definitions. Following this observation, we found it paramount and tempting to be interested in studying and analysing this new relationship. The importance of this study lies in the fact that the dictionary is generally the first source to consult when it comes to searching for the meaning(s) and use(s) of words. It is in this sense that we assume that the lexicographer, through his dictionary, restores a motivated relationship between the entries and their lexicographic definitions. To verify this hypothesis, we adopt an analytical and descriptive study on a corpus that is extracted by referring to the Historical Dictionary of the French Language. Based on the results of our study, particularly the nature of information on the etymological order in the morphological and semantic making and evolution of the French lexicon, we, therefore, were able to confirm that the Historical Dictionary of the French Language allows re- expressing a new motivated relationship between the entries and their lexicographic definitions: meaning(s) and contextual use(s). The linguistic process in fact explains how the arbitrary relationship that links the signifier and the signified of a linguistic sign becomes a motivated relationship between the entry and its lexicographic definition in the Historical Dictionary. It is noted also that the Historical Dictionary contributes to the use and enrichment of the French lexicon, particularly in terms of its morphological and semantic evolution. A major conclusion is related to linguistic signs which, by becoming inputs in the Historical Dictionary, acquire an autonomy which could be partial or total, and this depends on the lexicographic treatment of linguistic signs in the Historical Dictionary. The article is meant to provide a new way of approaching the notion of the arbitrariness of the linguistic sign, and this by taking into account the lexicographical specificities of entries in language dictionaries in general and in the Historical Dictionary in particular.]]>
En lisant un texte, en écoutant un discours ou en apprenant une langue, nous sommes amenés presque systématiquement à consulter un dictionnaire de langue ; et ce dans le but de comprendre le(s) sens des mots difficiles. A ce sujet, la linguistique, selon Ferdinand De Saussure, définit les mots comme des signes linguistiques, ayant été construits à partir d’un rapport arbitraire entre un signifiant et signifié. C’est dans le contexte de cette définition des mots que le dictionnaire remplit une fonction linguistique importante, à savoir : réexprimer le rapport arbitraire entre les mots et leur sens à travers l’explication et la contextualisation d’un rapport nouveau entre les entrées et leurs définitions lexicographiques. A la suite de ce constat, nous avons jugé qu’il est intéressant et important de nous intéresser à étudier et à analyser ce nouveau rapport. Cette étude tient sa valeur du fait que le dictionnaire constitue généralement la première source à consulter quand il s’agit de chercher le(s) sens et le(s) usage(s) des mots. C’est dans ce sens que nous supposons que le lexicographe, à travers son dictionnaire, rétablit un rapport motivé entre les entrées et leurs définitions lexicographiques. Pour vérifier cette hypothèse, nous avons mené une étude analytique et descriptive sur corpus constitué à partir du Dictionnaire Historique de la langue française. Par conséquent, en nous basant sur les résultats de notre étude, et notamment sur la nature des informations d’ordre étymologique sur la formation et l’évolution morphologique et sémantique du lexique français, nous avons pu confirmer que le Dictionnaire Historique de la langue française permet de réexprimer un nouveau rapport motivé entre les entrées et leurs définitions lexicographiques ; signification(s) et usage(s) contextuel(s).]]>

The present research paper attempts to examine the attitude of the Labour Government 1945-51 towards the process of decolonisation in British West Africa and whether the party, with its socialist agenda, was able to initiate any new course different from that of the capitalist, imperialist Conservatives. To inquire into this, the paper sheds light on the colonial policies adopted by the Labour Party before 1945 and after to show how far the Party’s actions once in office were consistent with its resolutions once in opposition. Previous historical research on British decolonisation dating back to the late 1950s presented the Party as playing a major role in unscrambling the empire and assigned it a positive role in Africa. However, the chief limitation of this historiographical genre is its lack of objectivity as it did not make use of primary sources. Relying on some archival sources and adopting an analytical approach, this study argues that the Labour government of 1945-51 did not mark a new move towards decolonisation in West Africa. Contrary to what has often been assumed, the Party’s approach to colonial questions was not different from that of the Conservative Party. Labour adhered to the political, economic, social and ideological constituents that defined the culture of imperialism. Its colonial policy was neither innovative nor did it involve any revolutionary break with the past official colonial policy. A major influential factor had been British national self-interest.]]>

This article discusses the legal basis of the notion of representation and relies on the support of the theoretical controversies banished on the widely discussed opposition between the authors of the voluntarist thesis and the authors of the objective thesis of the contract in order to reach the position of the Algerian civil code in relation to the two theses. We reached the conclusion considering that the civil code cannot choose the voluntarist thesis, and that the Algerian law could build the theory of representation on the model of the Islamic law. Indeed, Fiqh has succeeded in bringing out the notion of perfect representation; Also, it should be noted that most contemporary legal systems have reached the same conclusion.]]>
Cet article discute le fondement juridique de la notion de la représentation, et s’appuie sur l’étayage des controverses théoriques bannies sur l’opposition largement discutée entre les auteurs de la thèse volontariste et les auteurs de la thèse objective du contrat afin de parvenir à la position du code civil Algérien rapport aux deux thèses. Nous nous sommes parvenu à la conclusion considérant que le code civil ne peut choisir la thèse volontariste, et que le droit Algérien a pu construire la théorie de la représentation sur le modèle du droit musulman. En effet, le Fiqh a réussi à dégager la notion de la représentation parfaite ; Aussi, il est à noter que la plupart des systèmes juridiques contemporains sont parvenus à la même conclusion.]]>

Semiotics is broad in space and horizons, because it includes the epistemological or epistemological approach. It is a science that derives its origins and principles from a wide range of fields of knowledge, such as linguistics, philosophy, logic, psychoanalysis and anthropology. One of the functions of semiotics is that it helps to assimilate various scientific issues, thus transforming the scientific discourse into a discourse based on language and the network of signs founding it. What is striking - at this stage - is that semiotics began to impose itself, thus displacing the position of some traditional approaches, such as the social (Marxist, psychological, historical) method. Interest appeared in the semiotic literary curriculum, and most critical studies - theoretical and applied - focused on the principles of this school, sometimes with translation and other times with critical activation. What we also notice at the beginning is the inaccuracy of the terms translated from foreign languages (French and English), so we find “semiology, sociology, semantics, symbology and etymology to refer to the science itself, and this idiomatic multiplicity creates a state of fluctuation in the reader. Semiotics as a method is far from being a ready-made template, applied automatically and awaiting its success. Rather, it is an analysis that adheres from the beginning to the end of the text with the general logic. Semiotics are multi-directional practices, as there are the semiotics of theater, the semiotics of the photographic image, the semiotics of political discourse, and the semiotics of prose and poetic narration. What is important is that all aspects of human daily activity are a subject of semiotics, and in origin and occupation, signs that reveal this culture and its identity.
