These skills become more complex when we are in a context of languages in contact and when we read texts produced in a second language. In this article, we look at a multilingual country, Lebanon, by analyzing articles published in Orient-Le Jour, a French-language newspaper. We seek to determine the multilingualism’s impact and the universe of reference on the texts’ comprehension produced in French. These texts are written by Azouri; a Franco-Lebanese journalist whose writings testify to her dual cultural affiliation. After analyzing several linguistic processes, such as borrowing, code switching, neologism, etc., the obtained results show that this journalist uses Lebanese language in her columns written in French, to highlight the Lebanese specificities and to affirm the Lebanese identity. This linguistic mix as well as the Lebanese socio-cultural background, that emerges through the studied texts, could cause comprehension difficulties for the non-Lebanese speakers, especially French readers. L’activité de compréhension de l’écrit requiert plusieurs habiletés linguistiques et non linguistiques. Ces compétences se complexifient quand on se situe en contexte de langues en contact et qu’on lit des textes produits en langue seconde. Dans le cadre de cet article, nous nous intéressons au cas du Liban, pays plurilingue, en analysant des articles publiés dans l’Orient-Le Jour, un journal d’expression française. Nous cherchons à déterminer l’impact du plurilinguisme et de l’univers de référence sur la compréhension des textes produits en français par Azouri, une journaliste franco-libanaise, dont les écrits témoignent de sa double appartenance culturelle. Après l’analyse de plusieurs procédés linguistiques tels que l’emprunt, l’alternance codique, le néologisme, etc., les résultats obtenus permettent de relever que cette journaliste emploie le libanais dans ses chroniques écrites en français pour mettre en exergue les spécificités du Liban et affirmer l’identité des Libanais. This paper is intended to offer a feminist reading of Wole Soyinka’s play The Lion and the Jewel by showing that its main women figures are constructed as tropes of Africa rather than being depicted as full-fledged individuals. Besides being deprived of self-determining agency, these women act as symbols who represent the traditional cultural values of Africa, and hence they never attempt to subvert the system of patriarchy which is rationalised by these values. Even more so, they are “idealised” by the dramatist so that they can convey his social vision of the African continent during its historical transition from tradition to modernity. More precisely, through their stories the playwright stresses the need of Africans to resist cultural changes that undermine their sense of black identity. Thus, Soyinka’s play confirms the view held by many Postcolonial Feminist critics such as Florence Stratton and Elleke Boehmer who argue that the importance of the African woman in many of the African male-authored texts lies mainly in her ability to represent what her continent represents. In conclusion, the female figures in Soyinka’s play are primarily given a voice as Africans who indict modernity rather than as women subjects who deplore their subordinate position in society. Ideology is a critical term in the domain of translation. This study aimed at identifying the ideological implications behind the translator’s lexical choices in Qutb’s Milestones into English. It also investigated the ideological, cultural and religious impacts that affect the flowing of meaning for the target audience. The sample of the study was Sayyid Qutb’scontroversial Islamic book ‘Milestones.’ The book was considered a manifesto of Muslim fanaticism in the eyes of the West. Two translated versions of the book were examined; one version was translated in 1981 by Cedar Rapids (publisher) and the other was translated in 2006 by A.B. al- Mehri. The study compared and analyzed the translator's lexical choices. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework was applied to provide a critical analysis of the hidden ideologies, socio- cultural context, power inequalities and implied meanings between the Source Text (ST) and the translator’s choices of words in the Target Text (TT). The study concluded that the inadequate lexical choice and Qutb’s explicit language were sensitive factors that affected the translational choices. The first and the second translations presented the tendency toward direct strategies such as literal translation and transliteration accompanied with explanatory notes, additions and footnotes to avoid any possible misconception for the non-Muslim target readers. In other cases, some choices underwent less direct options like paraphrasing and preferring accuracy over the economy of the text. In our case, and in order to increase the possibilities of improving communication skills in French as a foreign language, it is a question of resorting to the television platform. Methodologically, and nothing but the level of the oral comprehension, for example, the authentic speeches in French are often characterized by such a complexity that even the linguistic competence, on its own, cannot account for all their significant scope. The communicational scope of certain cultural-heavy discourses, as the example we propose in this modest article, requires on the part of the teacher a new refocus on the encyclopedic competence, as a subsidiary form of cultural competence, but how decisive to decipher the messages which shape exolingual communication in French. To do this, the television tool embodied by the fiction- documentary proves to us to be very interesting, since, by its contribution in audiovisual information, it will facilitate access to some hidden forms (but which are both quite obvious and implicit for the native speaker) of the meaning inherent to any authentic production in contemporary French. L’enseignement/apprentissage d’une langue étrangère exige désormais que l’on explore de nouvelles pistes didactiques hormis celles déjà mises en place. Dans notre cas, et afin d’accroître les possibilités d’améliorer la compétence communicationnelle en français, il est question de recourir à la plateforme télévisuelle. Sur le plan méthodologique, et rien qu’au niveau de la compréhension orale, par exemple, les discours authentiques en français sont souvent caractérisés par une telle complexité que même la compétence linguistique, à elle seule, ne peut rendre compte de toute leur portée significative. La portée communicationnelle de certains discours à forte charge culturelle, à l’image de l’exemple que nous proposons dans ce modeste article, exige de la part de l’enseignant une nouvelle recentration sur la compétence encyclopédique, en tant que forme subsidiaire à la compétence culturelle, mais combien décisive pour décrypter les messages qui façonnent la communication exolingue en français. By looking carefully at the history of science fiction, we can notice that African American authors have been excluded from the scene for a long time due to the “whiteness” of the genre in terms of writing and publication. In addition to racism, sexism persists in the science fiction community. Hence, marginalized black women writers of science fiction try to include more black women characters in their literary works. Through Binti, Binti: Home, and Binti: The Night Masquerade, Nnedi Okorafor focuses on the experience of being black and woman in a technological society of the future. This study discusses how Okorafor provides sharp comments on the lives of black women in America in terms of “race” and “gender.” She challenges the stereotypical image of the black woman as “other” through the subversion of white norms and traditions. In this analysis, we use “Afrofuturism” and “black feminism” as a theoretical framework since “Afrofuturism” tackles African American issues related to twentieth-century technoculture, and “black feminism” deals with black women empowerment. The major character, Binti, proves that she deserves to reach a higher position as an empowered girl of the future, which gives her self-confidence to be autonomous and to have control over her own life. The methodology used is descriptive since it exposes the characteristics and the translation strategies to answer them. The results obtained highlight that these terminological peculiarities, clearly classified, usually hamper the work of the translator and that it is therefore essential to deal with the question by providing solutions in relation to the behavior that the translator should have to face them. L´objectif principal de cet article consiste, d´une part, à attirer l´attention des traducteurs1 en langues espagnole et française sur les particularités terminologiques des textes médicaux pouvant constituer des pièges quant à la tâche traduisante qui est la leur et, d´autre part, à consigner les stratégies à adopter afin de recréer dans des conditions optimales un texte source dans un texte cible. La méthodologie utilisée est descriptive puisqu´elle expose lesdites particularités et les stratégies à adopter pour y répondre. Les résultats obtenus mettent en relief que ces particularités terminologiques, clairement classifiées, entravent habituellement le travail du traducteur et qu´il s´avère donc essentiel de s´occuper de la question en apportant des solutions en relation avec le comportement que celui-ci doit avoir pour les affronter.
