تعرضت اليهودية والنصرانية قبل مجيء الإسلام إلى تحريف كبير، حيث كانت نصوصهما مسرحا للفوضى والعبثية من قبل رجالاتها. فلم يبق فيهما إلا النزر القليل من التوحيد، ، فلما جاء الإسلام بين أن هذه الكتب قد طالها التحريف بالزيادة و النقصان و التبديل، وأن القرآن الكريم هو الكتاب الوحيد الذي لم يتعرض للتحريف، فقام المسلمون منذ عهد الرسول –صلى الله عليه وسلم- إلى يومنا هذا بالدعوة إلى المنهج القويم والصحيح ألا وهو الإسلام، فانتشر انتشارا واسعا، إلا أن أعداء الإسلام لم يرضهم هذا الانتشار الكبير والعالمي للإسلام، فقاموا بحملات شرسة ضده ، فألفوا الكتب الطاعنة في صحة القرآن، وأن الإسلام ما هو إلا هرطقات لا غير، فانبرى المسلمون للرد على مثل هذه الشبهات، ودونوا الكتب والرسائل في بيان بطلان عقائد الملل الأخرى، وانحراف كتبهم ،خاصة كتب اليهودية والنصرانية. وكان من بين هؤلاء العلماء، أبو البقاء تقي الدين الجعفري المصري في كتابه "تخجيل من حرف الإنجيل".
يتناول هذا البحث دراسة حركة من أهم الحركات اليهودية الحديثة، التي كان لها أثر كبير في المجتمع اليهودي بمواقفها الوسطية بين التيار الأرثوذكسي المتشدد والتيار الإصلاحي المنفتح، وقد درست فيه الحركة من حيث التعريف والنشأة، وأهم الأمور التي أحدثتها أو قامت بتجديدها لتلبية حاجات الشعب اليهودي حسب متطلبات العصر، دون التخلي عن محتوى الديانة اليهودية.
