تعتبر الفضاءات العامة الافتراضية إحدى أهم أشكال الإعلام الجديد التي فرضت نفسها بقوة في الساحة الإعلامية العربية ، وأصبحت تحظى باهتمام وإقبال منقطع النظير من قبل مختلف الفئات الاجتماعية باختلاف اهتماماتها وانتماءاتها، كما أفرزت واقعا افتراضيا يحمل في طياته العديد من التحديات التي تؤثر بشكل مباشر على بنية المجتمع العربي ومعالم هويته، ففي ظل الظروف والأزمات التي تعيشها المنطقة العربية من نزاعات وثورات نمت وتطورت في رحم هذه الفضاءات الافتراضية وتغذت مما تحمله من مضامين وما نتج عنها من تحولات، أصبح الباب مفتوحا على مصرعيه لتوظيف هذه الفضاءات الافتراضية من أجل إعلاء هويات فرعية قائمة على أساس الولاء العرقي أو الديني أو الأيديولوجي... على حساب ارساء وتدعيم الهوية الوطنية القائمة على أساس الانتماء للوطن، مما يؤدي الى خلخلة ثوابت الهوية الوطنية ويجعل المنطقة تتخبط في العديد من المشاكل والأزمات، ويفتح المجال للعديد من المخاوف حول مستقبل الهوية لدى المواطن العربي في الوقت الذي تعيش فيه العديد من الأقطار العربية أصعب لحظاتها بين مساعي الواقع الرامية للوحدة والاندماج والمضامين الافتراضية الداعية للتكتل والانفصال. 
The virtual public spaces are one of the most important forms of the new media, which have imposed themselves strongly in the Arab media arena. They have received unprecedented attention and attention from different social groups according to their interests and affiliations and have created a virtual reality that carries many challenges that directly affect the structure of society.
