This research paper examines the central themes of perseverance and determination in Hemingway's work and their significance in the protagonist's journey. The study employs a close reading approach, analyzing key passages and character interactions to unravel the multi-layered narrative of Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman. Through his relentless pursuit of the marlin, a formidable opponent, the novella delves into themes of endurance, determination, and the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity. The paper investigates how Santiago's unwavering determination to capture the marlin serves as a metaphor for the human struggle against life's challenges. It explores the psychological and emotional dimensions of Santiago's character, highlighting his unwavering resolve and unyielding spirit in the face of physical exhaustion, isolation, and the relentless forces of nature. Additionally, this research paper examines the symbolism of the sea as a metaphor for life's unpredictable and unforgiving nature. It analyzes the character's interactions with the sea and the transformative effect it has on his mindset and perception of the world. The paper also explores the role of Santiago's relationship with the young boy, Manolin, as a source of emotional support and reinforcement of his determination. تهدف الدراسة الحالية إلى تحديد فعالية الوعيالتثاقفي في تحسين الكفاءة التواصلية لمتعلمي اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية. نسعى من خلال هذه الورقة لمساعدة المتعلمين على تطوير مهاراتهم التواصلية عن طريق زيادة وعيهم لأدراك أهمية التثاقف .فرضيتنا هي أنه إذا تم رفع كفاءة التثاقف لدى المتعلمين ، فسيتم تعزيز مهاراتهم التواصلية. تم اختيار تصميم بحث وصفي لمعالجة موضوع البحث الحالي. كما تماستعمالاستبيان لطلبة السنة الثانية في قسم اللغة الإنجليزية بجامعة باتنة 2. بعد تحليل وتفسير إجابات المتعلمين ، تم تأكيد الفرضية وطرح بعض الاقتراحات للأساتذة فيما يتعلق بالوعي بأهمية التثاقف

The present study aims at identifying the effectiveness of intercultural awareness in improving EFL learners’ communicative competence. The main concern in the present paper is to help learners develop their communicative skills by increasing their intercultural awareness. It is hypothesized that if intercultural competence is raised in learners, then they will have their communicative skills enhanced. A descriptive research design is opted for to tackle the present research theme. A questionnaire was devised for second year students at the department of English, Batna2 University. After analysis and interpretation of the learners’ answers, the hypothesis was confirmed and few suggestions are put forward for teachers as far as intercultural awareness is concerned
