لقد بنى العرب على مدى الزمان تصوراتهم عن البلاد الأخرى المجهولة أو شبه المجهولة، حسبما أظهرت المدونات السردية بدءًا من العصور الإسلامية الأولى، وصولًا إلى العصر الإسلامي الوسيط الذي شكل صعود الأدبيات الجغرافية على نحو خاص، تدخل ضمن هذه السرديات كتب الرحلات ومعاجم البلدان وكتب التأريخ الجغرافي. في هذه المدونات تظهر أمكنة حقيقية وأخرى متخيلة، ذات صفات أو أحداث خيالية ذات بعد غرائبي، وكذلك تأخذ المخلوقات التي تسكنها أشكالًا غروتسكية، تتناسب مع الطابع غير المألوف الذي يسود هذه الأمكنة، فالمخيال الذي أنتج هذه المخلوقات اعتمد التقنيات الغروتسكية في بناء هيئتها، مثل تقنية التركيب/ المزج، كالبشر ذوي رؤوس الكلاب والحيوانات ذات رؤوس البشر وأجنحة الطيور، وكذلك تقنية التشويه، كالنسناس ذي الشق الواحد، الذي له عين واحدة وأذن واحدة ونصف وجه ونصف جسد وذراع واحدة وساق واحدة، وأيضًا تقنية الإفراط في الحجم سواء بالعملقة أو بالتقزيم. بعض هذه المخلوقات يتكرر في أنحاء جغرافية مختلفة، فيما بعضها يظهر في ناحية جغرافية واحدة، ومنها ما يرجع أصله إلى الانمساخ عن البشر أو الحيوانات، فيما الآخر يعتبر خلقًا أصليًا.
Over the ages, Arabs built their own visualizations on other unknown andsemi-unknown countries. That appeared in narrative inscriptions starting fromthe early Islamic ages, continuing to medieval Islamic ages that saw the rise ofgeographic literature. It included travel books country encyclopedia andgeographical history books. These inscriptions show actual and imaginedlocalities, with imaginative characteristics or events with an exotic perspective;or imagined creatures that inhibit such localities. Such creatures appear withgrotesque shapes, as the imagination that created such species used grotesquetechniques in its building, such as combination. For example, the combinationof humans with dog heads and animals with human heads and wings. Anotherexample is disforming; such as the one sided Blemmys, with one eye, ear, face,torso, arm, and leg. A further example is size exaggeration such us giantism anddwarfism. Some of these creatures appear in multiple geographies, such as theBlemmys, while others appear in only a single locality or a single inscription.Some of these creatures trace their origin to monesterizing humans or animals,and others appear to be an original creation.
