Social media deviations among university students in Ghana
Unlike recent research that concentrated on the importance of social media platforms, the current study aims at exploring deviations on social media platforms. This research paper seeks to analyze social media deviations among Ghanaian students. The study adopted a quantitative survey approach by administering an online questionnaire to undergraduate students of the university and analyzing the data using descriptive statistics. Through the method of investigation and answering of questionnaires by learners, all the social media deviations were revealed and classified. The participants of this research comprised 597 level 100 students at the Ghana Communication Technology University. Through investigative approach by means of open-ended questions, it was revealed that the improper use of social media platforms in Africa, particularly, in Ghana cannot be overemphasized. The major findings of social media platforms were put into eight (8) categories, namely: propagation of falsehoods, propagation of profanity, pejoration, promotion of pornography, patronage of plagiarism, using people’s pictures in a very ridiculous and humiliating manner, swift sharing of horrific images and browsing at the odd times even during major functions like state functions and Church services. Despite the numerous deviations on the social media platforms, the marketing or promotion of businesses, the didactical/pedagogical significance of social media as well as its role as the swiftest medium of communication and dissemination of information cannot be overlooked.
