احتلت المؤسسات الوقفية مكانة بارزة في المجتمع الجزائري وظلت هذه الأخيرة تتطور وتتنوع أملاكها وتنتشر، وازدادت أكثر بعد إفشال المشروع الإسباني الصليبي في العدوة المغاربية وتأسيس الدولة الجزائرية في المغرب الأوسط عام 1518م، حتى أصبح مؤسسة فاعلة ومؤثرة دينيا اجتماعيا وثقافيا واقتصاديا في المجتمع، حيث أصبح يستفيد من خدماتها الفقراء والمحتاجين والغرباء وأبناء السبيل والأسرى المسلمين في سجون النصارى وأيضا دور العبادة والمؤسسات التعليمية والصحية. وقد قامت في الجزائر عدة مؤسسات وقفیة تسهر على تنظيم الأوقاف التابعة لها وتوجيه مداخيلها لسد متطلبات المجتمع، وكان على رأس هذه المؤسسات الوقفية مؤسسة أوقاف الحرمين الشريفين، التي تعتبر من أقدم المؤسسات الوقفية في الجزائر، إذ تعود حسب بعض الدراسات إلى العصر الإسلامي الأول. و أما خلال فترة الدولة الجزائرية في الفترة العثمانية فقد تصدرت هذه المؤسسة الوقفية المكانة الأولى من حيث الأهمية، وذلك بتعدد الأملاك الموقوفة التابعة لها و استحوذت على غالبية الأوقاف داخل مدينة الجزائر  وفي محيطها و أيضا في باقي المدن الجزائرية الأخرى
Waqf institutions occupied a prominent place in Algerian society as well as in other Muslim societies. And these institutions continued to develop and diversify their property and expand, and increased further after the failure of the Spanish crusader project in the Maghreb and the establishment of the Algerian state in Central Maghreb in 1518, to become an effective institution and influential religious social, cultural and economic in the community in the sense that they are taking care of the needs of society, The poor, the needy, the strangers, the sons and daughters of the Muslims in the prisons of the Christians, as well as the houses of worship and the educational and health institutions.
In Algeria, several endowment institutions have been established to ensure the organization of endowments affiliated to them and direct their income to meet the requirements of society. At the head of these endowment institutions was the Waqfs of the two Sacred Boundaries, which is considered one of the oldest Waqfs institutions in Algeria, as it dates back, according to some studies, to the first Islamic era. And during the period of the Algerian state in the Ottoman period, this Waqfs institution took the first place in terms of importance, due to the multiplicity of the Waqfs properties affiliated with it, and it acquired the majority of the endowments inside and around the city of Algeria, as well as in the rest of the other Algerian cities
